Kitchen and Door Styles

When buying a bespoke handmade kitchen from Higham Furniture, you can be sure that your design is crafted from the highest quality woods and components.

We are very flexible and if you have specific requirements in mind then let us know. However, we have a few standards that provide a good starting point for any kitchen design.

Framed vs Plant-on Doors

We make kitchens with Framed or plant-on doors. Both styles are at home in contemporary and classic settings and it is really up to your own preference as to which style you prefer.

Framed

In framed units the doors are inset into a frame. The doors are hinged using quality visible hinges which are available in a number of materials to match your style. Please note that built-in appliances will often be inset into the cabinets and the frame set around them, e.g. a 600mm oven would be installed into a 680mm framed cabinet.

Plant-on

Plant-on (sometimes called lay-on) units have the doors planted on top of the carcasses. Hinges are high quality, German made, hidden hinges. We fit door softeners to stop door slamming at no additional cost if that is your preference.

Door Styles and Construction

All our doors are created solid hardwood stiles and rails but the style and materials are up to you. Our most popular styles are variants of the shaker door where the centre panel recessed behind a border

We have made a number of different styles with different sized rails, a chamfer or moulding between the rail and the centre panel, raised centre panels, etc. Why not talk to us about your preferences?

Drawer Construction

Our drawers are made from hardwood timber dovetailed front and back with a strong bottom. We usually use Maple for our drawers as they are very strong and the light colour compliments both painted and hardwood kitchens.

Our drawers use quality Blum fully extending, soft and slow closing drawer runners as standard.

Cabinet Construction

All of our cabinets are made with hardwood plywood as detailed in the materials page.

The cabinets are put together using rabbet joints as we find they are the strongest and longest lasting.

The cabinets have a recess at the back of 65mm for services such as pipes and electrics although this can be adjusted to meet your requirements. We usually increase this to 100mm for sink units.

The plant-on units can have slow door closers fitted to stop door slam. The framed units cannot have these fitted but they do have butt hinges in a number of different finishes.

Our shelf supports are in matching stainless steel or brass with a sleeve that is inserted into the cabinet. Alternatively for small additional cost we can install bookcase strips.

Free-standing vs Fitted

We offer free-standing and fitted kitchens. Free-standing kitchens can be easily installed and moved around to meet your requirements. Fitted kitchens are a more permanent and offer the most space efficient option.
