This classic cream painted shaker kitchen is a great example of what to do with a Victorian side-return kitchen. The full-width sliding doors provide easy access to the garden, whilst creating a whole new family room with kitchen and dining table. The brief was to achieve a large, open plan family space that included a large island with hob and dramatic pendant lights above. Limited roof space meant that the ceiling-mounted extractor above the sleek induction hob was housed within a bespoke ceiling box.  The ceiling box is exactly the same size as the island, providing a pleasing symmetry to the layout. For dramatic contrast, the island is painted in Off Black by Farrow & Ball, which keeps the colour scheme simple yet effective. The larder cupboard, next to the fridge-freezer, has a combination of pull-out drawers and fixed shelves, providing lots of super-practical storage for smaller items that can be seen and accessed at a glance.
