We love the challenge of designing an island feature for our clients … this particular one is a great example of making every square inch work!
When we started work on this kitchen, our clients had a simple, achievable list of must-have features which included a larder cupboard and seating at the island with enough room to spread out with paperwork or homework. Their choice of cabinetry was our Handleless Shaker – perfect for the contemporary, simple Shaker look they wanted.
The kitchen layout is extremely straightforward – a large island facing one long run of cabinets along the back wall of the kitchen, with the whole space flooded by light from the run of fully-glazed sliding doors. The range cooker is centered in the long run, with wall cabinets and extractor above, and bookended by a fantastic larder cupboard and the double door fridge-freezer, which creates balance and symmetry.
The larder cupboard opens up to reveal a set of open shelves and a useful work surface with a double socket – just the place to park the food processor or coffee grinder. Those open pull-out drawers below are perfect for bread, fruit, and veg or simply for neat rows of packets and boxes which can be seen at a glance.
The island features frame-to-ground plinths for a modern, solid look, with work surface overhang on two sides. This provides seating for four … which is nice and sociable and works well for busy breakfast times as well as casual evening suppers. We think the limed oak Island Trays are a great finishing touch – each one can be removed completely to use as a traditional tray, but they can also serve as individual drawers for all that ‘kitchen stuff’ that accumulates seemingly from nowhere!
