Our client approached us with the vision of transforming their contemporary kitchen into a design that echoed the traditional charm of their historic property. They aspired to fuse the timeless allure of classic styles with the conveniences of modern appliances and efficient storage solutions. A unique aspect of their home was a fireplace with recessed niche shelving previously used for decorative displays, which they hoped to repurpose.
One of the main challenges of this project was the existing fireplace. Though our client was hesitant about major structural alterations, we introduced the idea of embedding the hob within the chimney. There were initial doubts regarding its viability, given its decorative role. Fortunately, the client’s builder confirmed that the chimney could be modified to accommodate a hob without compromising on height.
Our original design concept showcased an island with an integrated sink, dishwasher, and bins. However, the client preferred having the sink positioned against the back wall, echoing their previous arrangement. We then incorporated an exquisite antique mirror splashback, illuminating the dishwashing zone and offering reflective glimpses of the verdant garden.
Freed of any appliances or fixtures, the island serves as both a versatile preparation space and a communal hub, perfect for social gatherings or tasks like assisting with homework. Sleek integrated appliances, including a Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer, elevate the kitchen’s uncluttered aesthetic. Meanwhile, a grand bi-fold dresser gracefully multitasks as a breakfast counter and additional storage. The finished space gracefully intertwines traditional charm with contemporary finesse, all the while astutely utilising every available corner.
