The bespoke kitchen was designed by Higham Furniture. Helen had previously worked with Tim and his team on a previous shared client’s project, so it was an easy choice. ‘I love the look and style of the work that Tim Higham and his team create,’ she says, ‘and it was an obvious choice to have all the cabinetry and joinery for our home made by Higham too. I really enjoyed working with them again, this time as a client. I like Tim’s old-school dry sense of humour but most of all, his professionalism and attention to detail is leagues above other designers.’
The generously sized space features bespoke floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in Higham Furniture’s Shaker style, painted in Scarlet ‘N’ Rust by Paint & Paper Library. A full-width antique mirror glass splashback and Higham flush pull handles in Aged Brass enhance the period feel, as does the Jacobean Stained Oak island with its haberdashery-style drawer storage and open-ended breakfast bar, perfect for casual dining.
The island also includes a Regis round ceramic prep sink with Quooker Fusion Round tap, which delivers hot, cold and 100˚C instant boiling water. Ideal for hot drinks and boiling water for cooking, it’s time-saving and energy-efficient and conveniently situated opposite the 4-oven AGA for safety and ergonomic flow. At the end of the main run of cabinetry, a Miele built-in oven offers steam and microwave functions, allowing for flexible cooking whether it’s for everyday meals or entertaining family and friends.
To the left is the sink run, painted in the same Scarlet ‘N’ Rust shade and incorporating a Regis fluted-front ceramic sink with twin-lever bridge tap and pull-out spray, both in Patinated Brass and both by Bidbury & Co.
Banquette seating is a great use of space and in Helen’s kitchen, it’s used in tandem with the breakfast bar for informal dining, having coffee with friends or catching up on paperwork. The freestanding Jacobean Stained Oak wine and drinks cabinet is positioned just near the three-step open entrance to the dining area, allowing guests to help themselves to a drink as they move from one space to the next. Both the banquette and the cabinet were designed and made by Higham Furniture.
The ladder was also designed and made by Higham Furniture and hangs on a rail designed by Higham and made by Armac Martin. It enables Helen to access the ceiling-height cupboards. The painted cabinetry conceals a double-door larder, which has plenty of room for dried ingredients, spices, baking kit and more, with a worktop surface for breakfast prep, open shelving and space-saving in-door racks.
The inglenook is another nod to nostalgia and the heritage of this property and now contains the 4-oven AGA. Worktops are Misty Carrara Satinato quartz by Cullifords, adding a clean, seamless finish to this eye-catching kitchen that successfully manages to blend the old with the new.
